Ahu'ena Heiau, at the center of the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel grounds near the Kailua Pier, is a temple, reconstructed by King Kamehameha 1812-13. Also on the site is a replica of the king's final royal residence. Historical walking tours are offered, and lu'aus are held at the site. Visitors may not enter the temple.

The company offers 1-hour narrated underwater voyages during which passengers can see exotic fish, colorful sea gardens, coral formations and marine animals through large viewing portholes. Body Glove Cruises departs from the Kailua Pier at jct. Palani Rd. and Ali'i Dr. Humpback whales migrate to this area every year, and naturalists explain their behavior during a 3-hour whale-watch tour. An underwater hydrophone allows passengers to listen to cetacean songs. Other marine life may also be encountered. Three-hour afternoon and 4.5-hour morning snorkel and dolphin cruises to Pawai Bay, where visibility is up to 100 feet, are offered. Other cruises also are available.

Hawai'i Forest & Trail has various departure points. Each of the eight available half- or full-day ecotours is led by interpretive naturalist guides. Guests are provided with necessary special gear and a snack or a meal as appropriate. Tour size generally is 4 persons minimum, 12 persons maximum.

Hulihe'e Palace

Hulihe'e Palace, 75-5718 Ali'i Dr., was built in 1838. The palace was a favorite retreat for Hawaiian royal families. Among furnishings in the two-story lava rock with coral lime mortar structure are the crested box Queen Kapi'olani used as her trunk when she visited Queen Victoria and the four-poster bed carved for Princess Abigail Kawananakoa. Other Hawaiian artifacts can be seen.

Moku'aikaua Church

Moku'aikaua Church, 75-5713 Ali'i Dr., was built in 1835 and is the oldest and first founded Christian church in Hawai'i. The building's stark architectural style reflects the austerity of the New England missionaries. The church, the third built on the site, was constructed by the people of Hawai'i using white coral and lava stone from their former temples, 'ohi'a wood from Mount Hualalai and koa wood. Guided tours are available.
